History of Kharghar Marathon

The main source of inspiration behind this Marathon is a great visionary, benevolent and philanthropic personality, Hon. Shri Prashant Thakur MLA from Panvel.

It was in 2005 that some great thinkers, planners and activists from Panvel got together with a goal in mind; and under the aegis of Ramsheth Thakur Samajik Vikas Mandal and Ramsheth Thakur International Sports Complex, they coined and started an Annual social event called the “Panvel Marathon” which was flagged off on 29-Jan-2006. Subsequently, in 2013, this marathon was shifted to Kharghar, and re-christened as “Kharghar Marathon”. Over the last 17 years, Ramsheth Thakur Samajik Vikas Mandal, Ramsheth Thakur International Sports Complex and Kharghar Marathon Committee, have successfully organised and conducted thirteen marathons, and all were a great success. With the passage of time, the Marathon has grown in size, participation, geographical spread, partnership and sponsorship. From this year onwards Rotary Club of Panvel Industrial Town, Panvel, has also partnered with the “Kharghar Marathon”.

The intended Goal of the planners was multi-faced; to create an awareness about benefits of health and fitness in one’s hectic workaholic life; to bring in unity and harmony in the Society through communication, association and meetings; to work as an inspiration for the youth; and to create an urge for selfless contribution in the collective development of society. All these put together was Aimed at building a strong, tolerant, and vibrant Society, which would actively contribute towards rapid and overall development of our nation.
